Whispers of a potential “dream team” are growing louder within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as grassroots supporters, particularly in strongholds like the Ashanti region, are increasingly advocating for a joint ticket of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party into the 2028 general elections. The call, fueled by a desire to prevent a return to power by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), highlights a strategic imperative for the NPP to present a united and formidable front.

One vocal proponent of this strategic alliance is Mr. Dominic Obeng, a tailor at the Kasoa market, whose sentiments reflect the views of many within the party’s base. “We need a team that understands both the language of business and the intricacies of the economy,” Obeng stated emphatically. “Agyapong’s entrepreneurial spirit combined with Bawumia’s economic expertise is exactly what Ghana needs.”

Kennedy Agyapong: From Entrepreneur to Political Force

Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament, brings a wealth of business acumen to the table. A self-made millionaire, Agyapong has built a diverse portfolio of successful businesses, including radio and television stations, real estate ventures, and import-export companies. His supporters believe his experience in creating jobs and managing complex organizations would translate well into effective governance.

Throughout his tenure in Parliament, Agyapong has cultivated a reputation as a maverick and a vocal critic of corruption. He has spearheaded numerous investigations into alleged malfeasance in government, earning him both admirers and detractors. While his outspoken style has occasionally drawn controversy, his supporters see him as a fearless advocate for transparency and accountability.

In the 2024 NPP presidential primaries, Agyapong contested strongly, presenting a platform focused on industrialization, job creation, and a crackdown on corruption. Although he did not secure the nomination, his performance demonstrated his significant appeal within the party and his ability to mobilize a dedicated following.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia: The Economist with a Vision

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, is a renowned economist with an impressive track record in public service. Prior to entering politics, he served as a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, where he played a key role in stabilizing the country’s macroeconomy and implementing key financial sector reforms.

As Vice President, Bawumia he drove force behind the government’s digitalization agenda, spearheaded initiatives such as the National Identification System, the Mobile Money Interoperability system, and the e-Pharmacy platform. These initiatives were aimed at improving efficiency, reducing corruption, and promoting financial inclusion.

In the lead-up to the 2024 elections, Bawumia emphasized his commitment to building a digital economy, promoting value-added agriculture, and creating a business-friendly environment for both local and foreign investors. His economic credentials and his focus on technology and innovation are seen as key strengths by his supporters. He won the flag bearer election. He however lost the general elections.

The Call for Unity: A Strategic Imperative

The call for an Agyapong-Bawumia ticket reflects a growing recognition within the NPP that unity and strategic alignment are essential for electoral success in 2028. By combining Agyapong’s entrepreneurial appeal and anti-corruption stance with Bawumia’s economic expertise and technological vision, the NPP hopes to present a compelling alternative to the NDC and secure another term in office.

Whether this alliance will materialize remains to be seen. However, the increasing calls from grassroots supporters like Mr. Obeng highlight the growing momentum behind the idea and its potential to reshape the political landscape in Ghana. The NPP faces a pivotal moment in its history, and its ability to unite behind a strong and credible leadership team will be crucial in determining its future success.
