Ghana has suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran as escalating military confrontations between Israel and Iran prompt concerns over regional stability and citizen safety. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision on Monday, June 16, 2025, confirming the immediate evacuation of Ghanaian nationals residing in Iran.

According to a statement posted on social media, the Mahama administration made the precautionary move to safeguard Ghanaian lives amidst the rising hostilities between the two Middle Eastern nations. “The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

While the Tehran mission is temporarily closed, Ghana’s embassy in Tel Aviv will continue limited operations while carefully monitoring the unfolding situation in Israel. Mr. Ablakwa urged Ghanaian nationals in Israel to maintain close contact with the consular department.

Despite the suspension in Tehran, the Foreign Minister emphasized that Ghana’s diplomatic relations with both Iran and Israel remain “cordial and constructive.” The decision forms part of broader efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Ghanaian nationals.

“No effort will be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way,” Mr. Ablakwa affirmed. He further called for calm and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritise diplomacy.

“The Government of Ghana reiterates its demand on both parties to pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities,” he said.

The decision follows a dramatic escalation, triggered by a large-scale Israeli airstrike on Iranian nuclear, missile, and military installations on Friday, June 13. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the offensive as preemptive, aiming to neutralise “an existential threat”. Tehran responded with retaliatory attacks, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.

The United States has supported Israel’s defence systems, intercepting Iranian missiles and drones, but has refrained from direct military involvement. Ghana joins a growing list of nations scaling back diplomatic presence and accelerating contingency plans for their nationals in the volatile Middle East.
