Transport in Jacobu, Amansie Central District, has ground to a halt as commercial drivers launched an indefinite strike protesting against the enforcement of official fare caps.
Drivers unilaterally raised fares on major routes, citing the high cost of vehicle maintenance caused by the area’s deteriorating road network. Fares from Jacobu to Kumasi have risen from GH¢18 to GH¢25, while the route to Afoako Junction has jumped from GH¢8.50 to GH¢15.
Police have begun arresting drivers charging these unapproved rates. While union leaders insist they will reverse the hikes only if roads are repaired, the District Chief Executive, Emmanuel Obeng Agyemang, has warned that unauthorized charges will not be tolerated. Authorities are currently engaging local motorcycle taxis to help mitigate the impact on stranded commuters.
