Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Finance Minister to begin negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This is a move by the government to aid the sinking economy.
The NPP government had earlier indicated that it will not join any IMF programme but the state of the economy has forced the government to seek help.
Arguments made against going to the IMF included the fact that it was only a failed government that will resort to IMF bailout.
There was a kenkey party after the government finished with the programme which government subscribed to during the tenure of John Dramani Mahama.
Kennedy Agyapong who is hoping to become flagbearer and subsequently the President of Ghana is on record to have said only failed governments resort to IMF bailout indicating that the NPP government has done extremely well and needs to be applauded and not condemned.
Apart from Kennedy Agyapong, Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah also made a similar argument indicating that they will shame their colleagues on the other side.
The Vice President in the leadup to the election 2016 indicated that going to the IMF was avoidable if government had listened to advise from experts.
