GJA’s Broken Promise: Kwame Sefa Kayi awaits house 8 years post-award

In a shocking revelation that raises serious questions about the integrity of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), renowned broadcaster Kwame Sefa Kayi has disclosed that he is still waiting for the three-bedroom house promised to him after being named the 2016 Best Journalist of the Year. The award, celebrated widely and sponsored by Koans Estate, was intended to honor the excellence of the host of the popular morning show on Peace FM, Kokrokoo.

On August 20, 2024, during his morning broadcast, Sefa Kayi was questioned by a colleague about the unfulfilled promise. His response was blunt: “A big no,” indicating that the GJA had failed to deliver on its commitment nearly eight years later, and he opted not to delve further into the disappointments surrounding the issue.

The silence from the GJA speaks volumes about the organization’s accountability and commitment to its members. As many news outlets, including Daily Graphic, celebrated Sefa Kayi’s achievements in 2016, the stark contrast of his current reality paints a troubling picture of neglect and broken promises within Ghana’s journalistic community. Will the GJA step up to address this incongruity, or is it yet another case of empty accolades in a society eager for recognition?
