Illegal gold mining threatens Agenda 111 hospital in Adansi Asokwa

Illegal miners have encroached upon the site of an unfinished ‘Agenda 111’ hospital in Adansi Asokwa, sparking urgent fears of structural damage and catastrophic flooding. The facility, which is approximately 90% complete, has been left abandoned following recent political transitions, inadvertently creating an open invitation for encroachers.

Residents report that mining excavations have reached the perimeter of the hospital, which sits perilously close to the Jimi River and several key government buildings, including the district police headquarters. Local assemblyman Agyekum described the destruction of arable land as “heartbreaking,” noting the blatant disregard for law enforcement stationed nearby.

Concerned citizens warn that the scarred landscape could lead to severe flooding, potentially endangering future patients and staff at the vital healthcare site. Despite mounting public outcry, the Regional Security Council has remained silent, leaving the multi-million-cedi project vulnerable to environmental collapse. With the facility’s future hanging in the balance, community leaders are now demanding immediate state intervention to halt the degradation of this critical national infrastructure.
