AngloGold Ashanti has inaugurated an 8.4 million Ghana Cedis (GHC8.4m) robotics centre in Obuasi, aimed at boosting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education across the region.
The facility, fully funded by the mining company, is one of the first of its kind in Ghana and will serve as a hub for innovation, creativity, and the study of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI). Though hosted at Obuasi Senior High Technical School, it is accessible to all second cycle schools within the Adansi traditional area.
Equipped with a laboratory for robotics, coding, algorithm, and engineering exploration, along with an exhibition hall and an Arduino lab focusing on modern electronics, the centre seeks to unlock students’ creative and problem-solving abilities.
Samuel Boakye Pobee, Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti’s Obuasi Mine, stated the centre aligns with the company’s strategic development programme to ensure Obuasi thrives “beyond gold mining”. He encouraged the formation of robotics clubs in local schools to nurture future engineers and innovators, contributing to a “strong, skilled, forward-looking Obuasi”.
Obuasi West Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kanin, described the project as “a profound investment in the future of our students”, praising AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to the town’s development. William Amankra Appiah, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, added that the centre would help transition formal education from theory to practical application.
