In a startling revelation, Ashantibiz News has uncovered a cunning scheme among some vegetable sellers in some major markets in Kumasi and Accra, where half-full containers are deceptively displayed to lure customers into believing they are getting fresh, fully packed produce. Our survey and interviews with some affected shoppers have shed light on this disturbing trend, which involves sellers masking rotten vegetables hidden beneath the surface.
Victims recounted their experiences of purchasing what they thought were fresh goods, only to later discover the inferior quality lurking at the bottom of their containers. “I was shocked to find moldy vegetables beneath the top layer. I felt tricked,” shared one disheartened customer from a bustling market.
Experts say this practice not only exploits consumers but could also pose serious health risks, as many of the concealed vegetables show signs of spoilage. A local health official called for immediate action: “We urge customers to be vigilant and report any suspicious vendors. This deception has to stop.”
Public awareness campaigns are now being called for, alongside stricter enforcement of market regulations, to protect consumers from this kind of exploitation. Authorities are urged to crack down on these dishonest practices to ensure fair trading and maintain market integrity.
