The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has organised a cooking competition for men as part of its activities to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day.

The Competition was held among representatives from the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), the Office of the Head of Civil Service (OHCS), Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS) the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection and Development Partners.

The International Women’s Day is instituted by the United Nations to globally celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

It is celebrated on March 8, every year, to also rally support at all levels to ensure that the rights and empowerment of women in all areas of national development are prioritised.

The judges unanimously declared all participants of the competition winners.

Mr Micheal Agbetsoamedo, a representative of the Ghana Blind Union, said it was not difficult for him to cook, however, the environment was strange to him because it was not his kitchen, so someone had to help him to reach the utensils.

He said he knew how to cook before he got married, and later, became totally blind so he had no issue with cooking.

Mr Agbetsoamedo advised men to help their wives in the kitchen even if they could not cook.

Mr Peter Essiam Asante, Head of Human Resource, Office of Head of Civil Service, said the gender roles that society had assigned, discouraged men from performing some responsibilities.

He said some men faced criticisms and discouragement when they tried to cook.

Mr Asante urged parents to train and allow male children to take part in all house chores.

Participants of the competition were awarded with plagues and products from the sponsors.

The Competition was organised in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, Wilmar Ghana, Bel Beverages and Bel Aqua, for men to show their prowess in cooking while appreciating the efforts of women in the kitchen.
